Smokey Bear Celebrates 75th Birthday, Reminds Americans “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires”

Portland, Ore. – Join us on Friday, August 9th to wish Smokey Bear a happy 75th birthday!

Since 1944, Smokey Bear has been working hard to educate and inspire Americans to prevent unwanted, human-caused wildfires. Smokey’s message of personal responsibility to prevent unwanted, human-caused fires is the center of the longest-running public service announcement campaign in American history. This message is relevant and urgent today as nearly 9 out of 10 wildfires nationwide are human-caused.

There have been 991 human-caused fires in Oregon and 912 in Washington in the 2019 fire season. The principal causes of human-related wildfires are campfires left unattended, debris burning on windy days, hot ashes and BBQ coals, and operating equipment that throws sparks.

“Our firefighters are very busy responding to lightning-caused wildfires,” said Dan O’Brien, Northwest Coordination Center Manager. “Please help us by being safe and responsible with fire so we don’t create unnecessary human-caused wildfires.”

As Smokey Bear reminds us, “Only you can prevent wildfires.”
