SW Oregon—Trash scattered across dispersed campsites on the Middle Fork of the Applegate River has been an ongoing problem for many years for the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Furniture, diapers, lawnmowers, camping gear, discarded clothes, and more: you name it, it’s likely been left behind at some point along the Middle Fork Applegate River. This rather remote corner of the RRSNF is a gem, if you can look past the detritus left behind by those who fail to practice the Leave No Trace ethos.

Following a story that local ABC affiliate KDRV 12 did on the state of the river corridor, there was an outpouring of support for public lands by volunteer groups hoping to lighten the (trash) load for the Forest. One of those groups, SOLVE, have partnered with the RRSNF to coordinate an army of volunteers to tackle the mess on September 23, 2017.

SOLVE is a non-profit organization that brings together individuals, business groups, and service and conservation groups through volunteering and education to restore Oregon’s natural spaces. Annually, SOLVE creates an average of 40,000 volunteer opportunities across the state!

Those interested in joining the effort to make the gem of the Middle Fork a little shinier should register on SOLVE’s Event Registration page. All cleanup supplies will be provided by SOLVE. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the day’s weather, and wear sturdy, close-toed shoes. All ages are welcome!

When: Saturday, September 23, 2017 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Where: Seattle Bar Picnic Ground (14339 Upper Applegate Road, Jacksonville, OR)

Please note: SOLVE and RRSNF personnel are monitoring fire and smoke conditions in the area. In the event of heavy smoke, the cleanup event may be postponed, and volunteers will receive updates before the project date.
