SW Oregon—As wet Fall weather arrives, so does the season for conducting prescribed burning on Forest Service-administered lands.

Beginning Monday, November 6, 2017, Powers and Gold Beach Ranger Districts will begin their Fall burning programs, with emphasis placed on pile burning in units located across the two Ranger Districts. Monday’s work will be in units located southwest of Lake of the Woods Lookout and Lake of the Woods Mountain.

Controlled burn operations are planned with required safety precautions in place, and lit by fire personnel during carefully selected and monitored conditions. A burn plan and “prescription” sets out the conditions which allow fire to consume the piles most effectively, all while protecting larger trees and soils. Fire managers select weather that will send smoke away from nearby sensitive communities as much as possible.

People are encouraged to follow the Forest on both Twitter and Facebook for updates on where and when prescribed burn operations are scheduled. Additionally, information is updated daily on the Rogue Valley Interagency Communications Center website.
