Grants Pass, Oregon, June 14, 2021—The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest will begin extensive repair work on Bear Camp Road (Forest Road 23), the mountain route that connects communities in the Grants Pass area and those near Gold Beach. The road is also frequently used as a shuttle route for those who float the Wild and Scenic Lower Rogue River in the summer months.

Work is scheduled to begin June 21, 2021, and will be ongoing at least through Labor Day. This project aims to improve road stability and repair failing segments by excavating and repairing severely distressed pavement to improve safety. Work will be done by Agness Company, and will start on the east side at milepost 14.5. Contractors will complete the work from east to west, with flaggers on site to aid in traffic control. Drivers can expect up to 45 minute delays to allow for the pavement to cool and space for large equipment to work on the narrow road corridor. There will be periods of at least 5 minutes after each closure to allow for passage of vehicles.

Those wishing to avoid the delays can utilize Highway 199 as the primary route that travels east and west.  Bear Camp is not recommended for trailers or RVs.

The RRSNF encourages people to drive with added caution in the area of construction, knowing that there will be equipment and people in the area, and with the expectation that road surfaces may be different than expected.

This work is being funded through the Great American Outdoors Act. The GAOA responds to the growing backlog of deferred maintenance on National Forests and Grasslands, which includes roads, bridges, visitor centers, campgrounds and other facilities.
