Wilderness Regulations

Nation-wide Wilderness Regulations:

  • Motorized equipment and equipment used for mechanical transport is prohibited. This includes the use of motor vehicles, motorboats, motorized equipment, bicycles, hang gliders, wagons, carts, portage wheels, and the landing of aircraft including helicopters.

Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Wilderness Regulations:

Wilderness specific restrictions:

Grassy Knob Wilderness   

  • Maximum group size: overnight use of the area by a group of more than 12 persons and/or 9 saddle or pack animals is prohibited. Note: this does not apply to day-use.

Kalmiopsis Wilderness   

  • Campfire restriction within Illinois River Wild and Scenic corridor: Prohibits building, maintaining, attending or using an open fire except in a firepan or similar device that will contain the fire and its residue.
  • Maximum group size: overnight use of the area by a group of more than 12 persons and/or nine saddle or pack animals is prohibited. Note: this does not apply to day-use.
  • Boating permits required: Mandatory unrestricted free permit required to float, via non-motorized devices, the Wild and Scenic Chetco and Illinois Rivers. Permit used to monitor use and for health and safety purposes. 

Red Buttes Wilderness   

  • Camping prohibited within 100 feet from lakes; 50 feet from streams or springs. over-use in these areas has led to severe loss of ground cover.
  • Maximum group size: 8 persons and/or 12 stock.
  • State of California campfire permits, required during fire season regardless of whether inside or outside wilderness; applicable only within California portion.
  • Grazing prohibited: No grazing before August 1. Because of the short growing season in the high-elevation area, grazing is restricted until after grass seed has "set" and dropped (i.e., usually after August 1).
  • Stock use restriction - mandatory setback from water: 200 feet. Enforced in order to maintain clean water and prevent de-vegetation of lakeshore areas.
  • Stock use restriction - no hitching or tethering: 1 hour. New special order, but same regulations as in previous years. This reg aims to reduce the mortality of trees and to end the creation of dusty/muddy stock-holding sites.

Siskiyou Wilderness  

  • Maximum group size: 25 members. Using a trail, campsite, or other area in any National Forest Wilderness in the Pacific Southwest Region by a group of more than 25 persons without a valid Visitor's permit authorizing such use is prohibited.

Sky Lakes Wilderness   

  • Campsite restriction when camping with stock: Equestrians must camp in designated sites within Seven Lakes Basin and the Blue Canyon Basin, as shown on public hand-out map.
  • Campsites and fires prohibited within 100 feet from lakes; 50 feet from streams or springs; preserves water quality, vegetation, and privacy of other groups.
  • Maximum group size: 8 persons and/or 12 stock.Number of stock permitted (12) provides for up to 8 people to ride and use pack animals during a visit.
  • Stock use restrictions: Mandatory setback from water: 200 feet. No hitching or tethering stock to a live tree for more than 1 hour; prevents spread of barren soil areas and girdling of trees.

Wild Rogue Wilderness   

  • Maximum group size: overnight use of the area by a group of more than 12 persons and/or 9 saddle or pack animals is prohibited. Does not apply to day-use.
