Jemez Ranger District

The Jemez Ranger District began as the Jemez Forest Reserve in 1905 before the Santa Fe National Forest was established ten years later. The Jemez mountains are very important to the people of the Jemez Pueblo. The Santa Fe National Forest works with the Pueblo to maintain their cultural landmarks, and to make sure that the management of the land is in accordance with the local community.

Be sure to stop at the Walatowa Visitor Center located near Jemez Pueblo on State Highway 4. It is a great way to learn about the rich culture of the area. The Santa Fe National Forest maintains an information booth at the center where you can get more information on recreational opportunities in the area. For hundreds of years, people have come to this area to enjoy the many hotsprings for their therapeutic value. Spence Springs and Seven Springs continue to be top destinations for tourists to bathe or hike. Soda Dam and Battleship Rock are must-sees, as well as the gorgeous red rock formations that make the Jemez landscape unique. Whether for a day trip or an overnight camping trip, there are many natural marvels for any outdoor enthusiast.
