Release Date: Sep 10, 2018

SANTA FE, NM – September 7, 2018 – For Immediate Release. Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to take advantage of favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality, and winds and weather forecasts to initiate a prescribed burn in the Cedar Springs vicinity on the Cuba Ranger District as early as Sept. 15 through Nov. 16.

A total of 1,454 acres may be treated in the area just north of the community of LLaves and north of the Dead Man Lookout (see map). Small blocks may be treated each day to decrease the daily smoke volume.

Prescribed/management fires are one of the most effective tools available to resource managers for restoring fire dependent ecosystems. The prescribed burns mimic natural fires by reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients and increasing habitat diversity. Each prescribed burn is designed to meet specific objectives. The Cedar Springs prescribed burn is designed to remove dead forest fuels provide community protection, and promote forest health. Prescribed burns are managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.

Smoke will likely be visible from La Jara, Cuba, Regina, Lindrith, El Vado, Chama, Abiquiu, Tierra Amarilla, Highway 96 and US Highway 84. Smoke may settle into lower elevations and drainages overnight, but should lift by midmorning.
