TOOLBOX FIRE

Contact(s): Amy Baumer

The Central Idaho Dispatch Zone is at HIGH Fire Danger.

The Toolbox Fire was reported yesterday at approximately 5:00 p.m.  The fire is estimated at 10-15 acres is burning in timber in the bottom of the Hunter Creek Drainage on the Lost River Ranger District.  Currently there are 12 firefighters on the fire with more resources arriving today.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Weather: there is a RED FLAG WARNING remains in effect from noon to 9 pm mountain daylight time today for strong gusty winds and low relative humidity.  Clear and dry conditions are expected ahead of a weak system moving through northern Idaho.  Relative humidity values are expected to be 10-15 percent across Central Idaho as winds increase with gusts 30 to 35 mph.  Breezy conditions will then continue daily through the week, but humidity may creep above critical thresholds, especially towards mid-week. Isolated to scattered showers are possible Wednesday and Thursday.

Nationally, there are 33 uncontained large fires in the west managed under a full suppression strategy, and 57 large fires managed under a strategy other than full suppression.  These fires are contributing to the smoke, which is drifting into the valleys surrounding Salmon and Challis.  The public can find further information on smoke at http://airquality.deq.idaho.gov/, https://arcg.is/1zfeqH, and http://idsmoke.blogspot.com/.

Updates and information will be provided as significant changes occur.
