Hurricanes

Hurricane season is June 1- November 30 each year. Your personal safety is important to us so we will make every effort to notify forest visitors when a hurricane watch or warning is in effect. In most cases, when time permits, all recreation areas will be closed prior to a hurricane hitting the Sumter National Forest.
A hurricane watch is issued for a coastal area when there is a threat of hurricane conditions within 24-36 hours, but may be issued up to 3 days in advance.
A hurricane warning is issued when hurricane conditions are expected in a specified coastal area in 24 hours or less. Actions for protection of life and property should begin immediately when the warning is issued.
