Francis Marion & Sumter National Forests in South Carolina update closures of recreation areas throughout the state to ensure public safety

Columbia, SC, September 14, 2018 –The USDA Forest Service is closely tracking the forecast models of Hurricane Florence. It has been determined that it is necessary to close additional areas on the Andrew Pickens, Enoree, and Long Cane Ranger Districts (the Francis Marion Ranger District on the coast closed recreation sites on Tues., Sept, 11) located on the Francis Marion & Sumter National Forests (FMS). Sites will be evaluated for health and safety and reopened as conditions allow following the storm passage.

The closures are being implemented in the interest of public health and safety. Forest Service officials at the FMS strongly recommend that, due to expected wind and rainfall, the public not use trails or general forest areas. Response times to medical or other emergency may be delayed by limited access.

Excessive rain and high wind have the potential to create high water, flash floods, falling trees, mudslides, and severe damage to facilities and roads. Some of the Francis Marion & Sumter National Forests is heavily forested, remote and mountainous, making the potential for hazardous conditions significant.

Anyone planning a visit anywhere on the Francis Marion & Sumter National Forests should seriously consider postponing their visit until the threat of Florence diminishes.
