Shawnee National Forest Plant-a-Tree Program
People often wish to leave living memorials for those they have lost or commemorate a tree in someone’s name. In response to these wishes, the Forest Service established the Plant-A-Tree Program, allowing individuals to donate money toward planting trees on national forest lands. The minimum donation towards the Plant-A-Tree Program is $10. All contributions to the Plant-A-Tree Program qualify as charitable deductions under section 170(c) (1) of the Internal Revenue Service code.
Where are the trees planted?
The trees are planted on general Forest lands. They are not designated on the ground as a memorial but are planted for multiple-use purposes. The size and species of the trees planted will be appropriate to the site and will be at the discretion of the Forest Service. The contributor does not receive any guarantees on the future use of these trees and the trees are the property of the United States of America.
How does the Program work?
To make an online donation, please use the Plant-A-Tree Program website. From there, you can specify donations to be made to the Shawnee National Forest.
If you prefer to pay by check, complete the Plant-A-Tree Nomination form and mail the form along with your donation to the Hidden Springs Ranger District address listed on the form.
Once the request is received a Plant-A-Tree Certificate (suitable for framing) is completed with the name of the person being recognized and signed by an official from the Forest Service. The certificate also lists the name of the person making the contribution. The certificate is then mailed to the address you indicate on the nomination form, along with an explanation of the Plant-A-Tree Program.
Can I nominate more than one person?
Yes. A single certificate can be generated by meeting the minimum donation of $10. If you would like to list more than one person on the certificate, please indicate this clearly on the nomination form. Additional certificates can be generated for every $10 donated and requires a separate nomination form. Payments may be combined on one check if mailed with multiple nomination forms.
