Innovative program prepares city dwellers for nature-based careers

Shawnee National Forest is working with Greencorps Chicago — a group dedicated to teaching urban residents how to steward nature. The five volunteers will explore, learn and tackle projects across the forest as part of an innovative nine-month-long job training program. By spending eight weeks with Shawnee staff, these city dwellers learn hands-on skills that prepare them for positions in horticulture, urban agriculture, tree care, landscaping, carpentry and ecological restoration.

While here, Greencorps Chicago volunteers will collect data for an invasive species inventory, reconstruct a trail in Panther Den Wilderness, work alongside the Hoosier pack team in wilderness and assist with construction of a new picnic shelter at Pine Hills Campground.
