Shawnee National Forest to Offer Field Trip and Open-house event for the proposed Little Cache Ecological Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project

HARRISBURG, IL. (SEPTEMBER 14, 2018) – Join the Shawnee National Forest staff for a field trip and open-house for the proposed Little Cache Ecological Restoration and Habitat Enhancement project in Johnson County. 

The Forest is proposing the removal of non-native pines, prescribed fire applications, stand improvement, natural area maintenance and protection of rare species and their habitat. The proposed project area is about 2,400 acres and is located on National Forest System (NFS) land in Johnson County, Illinois. The project area is approximately 5 miles north of Vienna, Illinois and is just east of Interstate 24 and accessible via the Bowman Bottoms Road.

Little Cache Project Field Trip: September 23rd at 1:00 p.m.  Signs will be posted along Bowman Bottoms Road for the field trip meeting location. Forest Service land managers and resource experts will lead the field trip into the project area and will discuss the proposed management activities to restore and maintain the native-hardwood oak-hickory forest-type.

Little Cache Project Open-house: September 25th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Hidden Springs Ranger District Office, located at 602 North First Street, Vienna, IL. Forest Service land managers and resource experts will be available to discuss the projects’ proposed actions and general forest management issues in southern Illinois.
