Smokey Bear’s 75th Birthday Party

HARRISBURG, IL—July 19, 2019— For 75 years, Smokey Bear has been protecting our forests and getting the word out about wildfire prevention. Most agree such a milestone is worth celebrating. Shawnee National Forest invites you to join them in celebrating Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday at a city park near you:

August 9th — Vienna City Park, Vienna, IL 10:00a.m.-12:00p.m.

August 10th — Lincoln Memorial Picnic Grounds, Jonesboro, IL 10:00a.m.-12:00p.m.

Activities include “Pin the Badge on Smokey”, practice building a safe campfire, visit with wildland firefighters and check out their fire engine, learn about fire safety and enjoy story time listening to the Smokey Bear story. In addition, hike along a Smokey Bear history trail and find out about how his wildfire prevention campaign started and has evolved over the years. All ages are welcome to participate.

Did you know Smokey Bear’s powerful message, “Only you can prevent wildfires,” is at the heart of one of America’s longest running Public Service Ad (PSA) campaigns? While his campaign began three-quarters of a century ago, and great strides have been made in preventing human-caused wildfires, he still needs help, as even today, nearly 9 out of 10 wildfires nationwide are caused by people.
