Get a Head Start on Summer with Free Family Fun at Cape Perpetua, Oregon Dunes

Waldport, OR – It’s starting to feel like summer at Cape Perpetua and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area where a variety of free family events are being held throughout June. In addition to the camping, hiking, tidepooling, and picnicking always on tap, visitors can choose from any of the activities below to experience this special place in a new way. Additional details on events are available online or at the visitor center.

Saturday, June 3: Celebrate National Trails Day with the Siuslaw National Forest, Yachats Trails Committee, and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Starting at 9am at the Cape Perpetua Visitors Center, hikers of all ages can enjoy a short presentation about trails followed by guided hikes ranging in difficulty.

Sunday, June 4: Test your luck at a free fishing day at Lake Marie near Winchester Bay. Great for beginners age 14 and under and families, learn to fish or show off your skills in a casting contest from 9am to 1pm. Rangers and staff will be on hand to help and give out prizes.

Saturday, June 10: PAWN Trail celebration with special guided hike at 1pm. Named for four families who were early residents of the area, the PAWN Trail features impressive old growth forest. Enjoyed the guided hike or go on your own with recently updated interpretive trail guide developed by local students. Meet at the trailhead near Florence, OR. 

Saturday, June 17: Join us for Family Ocean/Forest Exploration Day at the Cape with forest and tidepool family programs, activities, and guided hikes. Free of charge; 10am – 4pm at the visitor center.

Thursday, June 22: Curious about the total solar eclipse coming to Oregon this summer? Join local astronomer Tom Carrico for a free presentation covering the science behind the event, how to view it safely, and everything else you need to know to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime event. At the visitor center 4pm.

Throughout the summer: Starting June 7, rangers will lead programs and guided hikes most days at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area and Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, with longer programs and guided hikes at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays.  Beginning June 16, junior ranger programs will be offered for kids Friday and Saturday evenings at campgrounds around the Oregon Dunes. The June 16 program will be held at Spinreel Campground from 5:30 – 7pm.

These events are free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport, federal recreation pass, or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and at some trailheads and day use sites.
