Public check points to be staffed this Saturday at the Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area

(Reedsport, OR) October 4, 2018 - On Saturday, October 6th, the Central Coast Ranger District of the Siuslaw National Forest will be staffing two public checkpoints for off-highway vehicles (OHVs) at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (ODNRA). The purpose of the checkpoints is to verify compliance with existing OHV regulations. Checkpoints will be located at the Hauser sand access point and the 10 Mile Beach OHV route, located within the ODNRA.

Forest Protection Officers and Law Enforcement Officers will be checking for compliance with sound limits established for OHVs while in use at the ODNRA. They will also be confirming that OHV users follow other off-road regulations such as use of safety flags, OHV permit stickers and OHV safety education cards.

"The staff at ODNRA has seen an increase in sound violations and in volume of complaints from community members due to noise," said Deputy District Ranger Garrit Craig. "We want to increase educational awareness around not just noise levels, but safety in general and to be consistent with our enforcement of these rules. Future checkpoints will be scheduled throughout the ODNRA riding areas, along with active enforcement."

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is managed for multiple recreational uses, both motorized and non-motorized. Due to its unique topography, varied recreational uses and proximity to residential areas, a 93 decibel sound limit is applied to all OHVs within the ODNRA.
