Family-Friendly Events on Deck on the Central Oregon Coast

A group hikes through a thick forest with a forest service rangerIn addition to the camping, hiking, tidepooling, and picnicking always on tap at and around Cape Perpetua and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, visitors can choose from a variety of activities and events to experience these special places in a new way.

These events are free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport, federal recreation pass, or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape Perpetua field ranger swears in two junior rangersScenic Area, Oregon Dunes Day Use, and many other locations. Summer 2017 Special Events

Ranger-Led Programs

Ranger programs most days at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area and Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, with longer programs and guided hikes at 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Most Saturdays, rangers will be at the Oregon Dunes Siltcoos Staging Area and will lead guided hikes on the Wax Myrtle Trail. Junior ranger programs for kids Friday and Saturday evenings at campgrounds around the Oregon Dunes. Programs are from 5:30pm – 7:00pm and alternate between Forest Service and State Park campgrounds. Ranger Programs

Ranger-led programs are available most days at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area and Cape Perpetua Visitor Center. Guided hikes are available every Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm.

Jr. Ranger Programs

Oregon Dunes Jr. Ranger programs each Friday in August from 5:30pm to 7:00pm will teach families about Oregon Dunes Restoration, OHV Safety, snowy plover protection, wildlife tracking, and other topics.

Evening Campfire Programs

Rangers will explore a unique theme each week related to threatened species, old growth forests, sharing the beach, and being a clean camp ranger.

  • August 4 and 18:  Evening Campfire programs at South Beach State Park 8pm
  • August 11 and 25:  Evening Campfire program at Beverly Beach State Park 8pm
  • August 12 and 26:  Cape Perpetua Campground Campfire and Jr. Ranger Programs 6pm

Family Forest Exploration Day

Enjoy guided forest hikes, special exhibits, and family friendly crafts.  Special exhibits will include Get to Know the Trees and An Ocean in the Forest. Interested in natural journaling? Join a Field Ranger Naturalist at 11am and 2pm to explore new ways to express yourself and connect with nature through a journal.  Ranger lead hikes will be available throughout the day. You can learn about our Clean Camp Ranger program and earn your Jr. Ranger badge while you’re at it.

Cape Perpetua Photography Program

Join professional photographer Dale Dombrowski for an interpretive presentation on photography and the "art of seeing".  Learn how to capture lasting memories by gaining an understanding of photographic composition techniques used by profession photographers.

Sweet Creek Falls

The perfect spot for a summer hike, join Field Rangers at Sweet Creek Falls to explore the cool forest and waterfalls of the Coast Range.

Marys Peak

High above the valley, Field Rangers will be on Marys Peak talking about meadow restoration and the spectacular views.
