Family-Friendly Events on Deck on the Central Oregon Coast

A group hikes through a thick forest with a forest service rangerIn addition to the camping, hiking, tidepooling, and picnicking always on tap at and around Cape Perpetua and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, visitors can choose from a variety of activities and events to experience these special places in a new way.

These events are free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport, federal recreation pass, or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape Perpetua field ranger swears in two junior rangersScenic Area, Oregon Dunes Day Use, and many other locations. June 2017

Friday, June 16, Become a Jr. Ranger

Learn about the adorable camouflage pro, the Western Snowy Plover, and earn a badge to become an Oregon Dunes Jr. Ranger and a Clean Camp Ranger. Join field rangers in fun, family activities and meet the legendary Smokey Bear!

Where: Spinreel Campground Staging Area. 11 miles South of Reedsport

Saturday, June 17, Dunes Restoration Programs

Join Field Rangers from to learn about dune landscapes, threatened species, invasive plants, and Oregon Dunes restoration efforts. Become an Oregon Dunes Jr. Ranger to help promote healthy dunes and forests.

When: 11:00am to 3:00pm
Where: Siltcoos Staging Area. Highway 101, near mile marker 198

Saturday-Sunday June 17-18, Guided Hikes

Explore different natural and cultural features of the Oregon Dunes as you hike with a ranger. All ages welcome. 

When: Hikes will depart at 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm, with shorter programs available throughout the day.
Where: Oregon Dunes Day Use Area. Highway 101 near mile marker 201

Saturday, June 17:  Family Ocean/Forest Exploration Day

Bring the family to explore the interaction between ocean and forest ecosystems at Cape Perpetua. Join field rangers in the rocky intertidal zone through the day and on a variety of ocean-themed hikes for this special low-tide event. 

Life at Waters Edge: Starting at 11:00am in the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center Theater, followed by a hike down the Captain Cook Trail.

Without the Modern World: Starting at the Visitor Center at 1:00pm, this short hike will explore how traditional life along the coast used abundant resources from the ocean and forest to thrive.

Biodiversity: Birds, Fish, and Invertebrates: Meet at the Visitor Center at 3:00pm to learn about the species on land and sea that rely on the habitats of the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve and Cape Perpetua Scenic Area.

When: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Thursday, June 22:  What to Anticipate in this Summer’s Solar Eclipse

Learn all about the August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse with Tom Carrico of the Heart of the Valley Astronomers. From the partial phases through the darkness of totality and back again. The mechanics of the eclipse will be explained, including its duration, where to observe it, what to expect during the approximately 2.5-hour event, how to observe it safely, some fun activities to try during the eclipse, and tips on photography. With an emphasis on safety, you will have all the knowledge and tools to thoroughly enjoy this once in a lifetime event.
