Trinity Landscape

LANDSCAPE HIGHLIGHTS

In January 2023, the Trinity Forest Health and Fire-Resilient Rural Communities was identified as one of 21 high risk landscapes to receive increased funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. The Trinity Forest Health landscape, located in northwestern California, encompasses 1.6 million acres, 67% of which are shared between the Shasta-Trinity and Six Rivers National Forests. The landscape centers on Trinity County and extends into neighboring Humboldt and Shasta Counties. Many communities within the Trinity landscape, including culturally significant tribal lands, are considered at high risk to wildfire.

Recent high-intensity fires have caused severe damage to several important watersheds and habitats for at-risk species, in addition to the impact felt by communities within the wildland-urban interface (WUI). Both the Shasta-Trinity and Six Rivers National Forests are coordinating efforts with key land management partners to prioritize projects that enhance fire-adapted ecosystems while reducing risk to communities and critical infrastructure.

SIX RIVERS NATIONAL FOREST FY23 PROJECTS

Mad River Ranger District August Complex - 2640 acres
Post-fire restoration efforts will aim to reduce hazardous fuels through thinning and commercial timber harvest as well as biomass and timber stand improvement. Completing remaining dozer line rehabilitation which includes the construction of water bars, pulling berms and machine piling dozer pushed trees for subsequent pile burning.Hand treating small fuels and boundary marking for future prescribed burning.

Mad River Ranger District Road Maintenance
Improve roadways to project areas in addition to critical access routes for forest users.Treatments include surface rock replacement, seal coats and asphalt overlays, spot surfacing, slide removal, installing dips, installing culvert risers, cleaning culverts, armoring fill slope, repairing burned holes, blading, brushing, and revegetating cut and fill slopes.

Lower Trinity Plantation Thin - 800 acres
Forest plantations are areas in significant need of fuels treatments to reduce impact from high-severity wildfire. Thinning treatments include reducing fuel continuity and stand density within forest plantations.

Surveys for Outyear Planning
Pre-NEPA surveys (Stand Exams, Wildlife, Botany and Heritage) to inform future fuels reduction projects.

SHASTA-TRINITY NATIONAL FOREST FY23 PROJECTS

Pettijohn Thin - 1700 acres
Hand treatments and commercial thinning for fuels reduction adjacent to the community of Lewiston and in proximity to Trinity/Lewiston Dams.

Ewing Rx Burn - 40 acres
Mechanical fuels treatments adjacent to the municipal water source for Hayfork, CA.

Westside Plantation Thin - 500 acres
Forest plantations are areas in significant need of fuel treatments to reduce the impact from high-severity wildfires. Reducing fuel continuity and stand density within plantations near Forest Glen, CA.

Trinity Post Fire Hazard Reduction and Salvage Prescribed Burning - 600 acres
Pile burning and thinning treatments around established fuel breaks near the communities of Weaverville and Lewiston.

Surveys for Outyear Planning
Pre-NEPA surveys (Stand Exams, Archeology, Botany, Wildlife) for out-year planning projects.
