REDDING, Calif. - Christmas tree cutting permits for the Shasta-Trinity and Lassen National Forests go on sale Nov. 1 through Dec. 22 in many locations across the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

Permits cost $10 each and are limited to one per household with a valid name and address.  Up to four additional permits may be issued for other households with separate names and addresses.   The person purchasing a permit must be at least 18 years old.  Permits are good for this year only.  Trees can be cut and removed any day of the week through Dec. 24.  Regulations, cutting instructions and a map of the Christmas tree cutting area will be issued with the permit.  All Christmas tree cutting permit sales are final.

Permits sold in any Shasta-Trinity National Forest office may be used to cut a tree in any authorized area within the Shasta-Trinity and Lassen National Forests. A stamp is required on the permit to cut a Christmas tree on the Lassen National Forest.

Ensure your visit to the Shasta-Trinity or Lassen National Forest is an enjoyable experience and complies with regulations by following these important tips:

  • Bring cold weather clothing, even if the day is nice when you start out. Also bring emergency food, water, tire chains and a shovel.  Have a full tank of gas in your vehicle.  Weather in November and December can change quickly – so be prepared.
  • Only cut or remove a tree with the main trunk less than six inches in diameter at ground level.
  • Attach the tag so that it is visible as soon as you load it on your vehicle. Collecting, possessing or transporting any part of a tree on National Forest system land without a valid permit is a Federal offense.  Violators will be prosecuted.

To request a permit by mail or for more tips on tree cutting and tree maintenance, go to the Shasta-Trinity National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/stnf and click on Christmas Tree Cutting Permit Sales.

Normal business hours for Forest Service locations are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  All offices will be closed Veterans Day (Nov. 11) and Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 25).  You may contact the closest Forest Service office to confirm hours of operation.  Forest Service offices accept only cash or checks (made out to the USDA Forest Service).
