Tahoe Fire Hire

The Fire and Aviation Management Program is very rewarding and requires talented people working safely as part of a team in a variety of specialized positions; including dispatch, engine crews, fire & fuels management, hand crews, helitack, interagency hotshot crews, and prevention.

Please check out the Fall Permanent FireHire Outreach for FY2021 for a complete Fire Hire information packet. This document provides everything you need to know about the Fire Hire process for permanent positions both on the Tahoe National Forest and throughout The Pacific Southwest Region 5.

The Fire Hire process can happen twice a year - once in the spring and once in the fall. This is the predominate time hiring occurs at the GS-09 level and below. Available permanent positions can be permanent full time or permanent seasonal. There can be also Temporary Seasonal positions available.

As positions are filled during the Fire Hire process, vacant positions are created that may not have been vacant during the outreach process. Hiring officials have the ability to immediately backfill those positions that have been vacated during the fire hiring process. This is why it is important to apply during the application period to any position and duty station you may be interested in and willing to accept if offered the job.

Wildland Firefighter Apprentice positions are permanent seasonal and could be hired at the GS-03, GS-04 level, and GS-05 level.

Applicant Tips

  • Contact the local U.S. Forest Service office of the duty location you’re interested in, for interest, questions, and specific hiring information. During the Fire Hire process all applications are submitted on www.usajobs.gov and are rated by subject matter experts. In order for you to rate out higher, you need to make sure your application is complete and thorough. Upload all required documents listed in the job vacancy announcement to the USAjobs application. Review the job duties listed in the job vacancy announcement. In your resume, describe in detail what your experience history is and especially previous experience that relates to the job duties described in the job announcement.  If you are only putting one line in your work history, you will not rate as high as a candidate. List all fire training you have attended, all fire qualifications, and describe in detail your fire experience. Proofread. Applicants must attach a copy of their IQCS Master Record or equivalent that shows they meet the IFPM requirements for the job.
