JUNEAU, Alaska – Five sets of scissors sliced through a bright yellow ribbon as the U.S. Forest Service’s Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and new partner Discovery Southeast celebrated the opening of a new bookstore at the front entrance of the facility on May 6, 2017.

Discovery Southeast President Sarah Moore, Executive Director Shawn Eisele, and board member Jamie Karnik joined MGVC Director John Neary and Juneau District Ranger Brad Orr in the ceremony to symbolize the beginning of a new partnership.

The bookstore will be open year-round to provide visitors and locals the opportunity to purchase Mendenhall merchandise, books related to nature and wildlife, the creations of local artists and much more. For the visitors’ center, strengthening the connection to the Juneau community is the greatest benefit of bringing in their new partner.

Discovery Southeast, a conservation education focused non-profit, will use the revenue from the bookstore to support programs for Southeast Alaska children. The organization’s goal is to ensure all Juneau kids have a foundation in nature.

“This new partnership with Discovery Southeast will bring the work of more local artists to the visitor center,” said Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Director John Neary. “It fits well with our desire to build a strong community connection with Juneau residents while offering relevant  interpretive items for everyone.”

“That’s kind of our jam: nature education,” said Shawn Eisele, the executive director of Discovery Southeast. “This is a new chapter for Discovery Southeast, and we are thrilled for the opportunity to offer more educational materials and programs for our community.”
