The Ketchikan Misty Fiords Ranger District, in cooperation with the Ketchikan Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) and Student Conservation Association (SCA) have completed assembly and delivery of the first of about forty new picnic tables destined to replace older tables located at the Signal Creek, 3 Cs, and Last Chance Campgrounds in the Ward Lake Recreation Area.

This is the first part of a multi-year effort to improve infrastructure in the Ward Lake Recreation Area, that is a hub of local recreation opportunities. This RAC-funded project project will also install larger grills in the day use area to support larger user groups. An Eagle Scout project to replace grills at campsites will also be a part of the process, as well as planned improvements to the trails.

The tables were cut and assembled from locally sourced materials by Forest Service Employees and Student Conservation Association members. The tables will be distributed first to the most used sites and where replacement tables are deemed critical due to wear. Unserviceable tables are being cut for firewood at camp sites and cabins. Hardware will be recycled for use in new construction and repairing serviceable tables.
