JUNEAU, Alaska, August 2, 2022—Due to significant public demand for day-use recreation areas, the Tongass National Forest is pleased to announce reservations can now be made through Recreation.gov for the Raven Shelter at Auke Village Recreation Area and Skater’s Cabin on the west side of Mendenhall Lake.

Raven Shelter may be rented between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight. Skaters Cabin may be rented 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Both shelters are $10/hour with a two-hour minimum reservation. Each reservation will have an $8 per transaction fee added to the cost. Shelters can be rented starting 180 days (6 months) in advance of your desired date.

“Of the fees collected for shelter rentals, 95% are returned to the Juneau Ranger District to provide the reservation service and to maintain these facilities,” said Pete Schneider, recreation program manager. “Thank you for your feedback and continued support of the District’s recreation program. We hope to expand the number of shelters available for online reservation by this fall.”

Reservations for the King Salmon Shelter at Lena Beach can still be made by contacting the Juneau Ranger District office during regular business hours. Currently this shelter has no fee and is available for reservations of up to four hours. Individuals can make reservations for up to two dates at a time.

Reservable shelters remain available on a first come first serve basis. However, if someone has a reservation, the shelter must be vacated and made available to them.

If you have questions, or wish to make a reservation, please contact the Juneau Ranger District at 907-586-8800.
