JUNEAU, Alaska, June 1, 2018 – The Forest Service announces issuance of a prospectus for big game guiding services for the Juneau Ranger District. This prospectus is being issued to invite proposals from interested big game guides to provide bear and goat hunting services to the visiting public. “Our goal is to select hunting guides best suited to provide visitors with a safe, satisfying hunting experience, while minimizing impacts to resources,” said Brad Orr, Juneau District Ranger.

The competitive process will result in the distribution of up to two brown bear hunts on the Chilkat Penninsula, one brown bear hunt in the Berners Bay area, one brown bear hunt within Taku Inlet, two brown bear hunts in the Snettisham-Whiting River area, six black bear hunts in the area between Berners Bay and Taku Inlet, and two mountain goat hunts on the Chilkat Penninsula. Each hunt represents a client participating in a multi-day hunt for that species.

This prospectus is being offered as part of the Shoreline II Outfitter/Guide Record of Decision (ROD), which allows for authorization of non-motorized outfitter/guide upland activities along the marine shoreline zone of the Sitka, Hoonah, and Juneau Ranger Districts; and Admiralty Island National Monument. The ROD provides management direction for remote setting tourism in the northern portion of the Tongass National Forest. It allows for continued growth in the tourism industry while protecting forest resources.

Big game guides interested in offering these hunts should apply now. The prospectus will be open for bids from licensed hunting guides June 1-August 1, 2018. The prospectus is now available online: http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/tongass/jrdbiggame.
