Into the Wild
One of our nation's greatest treasures is the National Wilderness Preservation System established by the Wilderness Act of 1964. Wildernesses are lands designated by Congress to be protected and preserved in their natural condition, without permanent improvements or habitation.

- The Wilderness requires sustained commitment and careful stewardship by both the Forest Service and the public to ensure its remarkable resources and values remain for future generations. Always observe the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace and follow all regulations associated with Wilderness areas.
- Some trailheads at Umpqua National Forest require a valid recreation pass, which you can purchase online. You can also purchase topographic maps for your trip online.
