Umpqua National Forest is hosting public field trips to the Calapooya Divide project area on the Cottage Grove Ranger District on Saturday, August 26th, and Wednesday August 30th, to view the project area and provide feedback on the draft Environmental Assessment.

The field trip begins at 9 a.m. at the Cottage Grove Ranger Station at 78405 Cedar Park Road, Cottage Grove, with a return time of 5 p.m. The first hour will be spent in the office sharing information about the planning area. People may stay just for the office meeting.

The day includes several stops, and will focus on resilience of forested areas to fire and possible spread of fire as well as the conditions of the forest and proposed treatments.

Contact Cameron Mitchell at(541) 767-5045 by August 18 if you plan to attend. Bring a lunch, water, weather-appropriate gear, and hiking shoes or boots. Participants should plan on carpooling for the field trip.

The draft environmental assessment for the Calapooya Divide project documents two action alternatives and a no-action alternative. The two action alternatives include commercial thinning, maintaining and restoring meadow, non-commercially treating surface and ladder fuels, and creating a strategic ridgeline fuel break.

The environmental assessment is available for review online at: www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=45988. A paper copy of the document may be requested by contacting the Cottage Grove Ranger District at (541) 767-5000.
