Salt Lake City, Utah, October 30, 2017 – Weather permitting Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest fire management personnel plan to implement the Upper Provo prescribed fire, Thursday, November 2, 2017 and Friday, November 3, 2017.
This 6,007 acre burn is located approximately 10 miles east of Kamas, Utah on the northeast side of the Mirror Lake Highway, between the Norway Flats road on the east and the Upper Setting road on the west. (see attached map)
Primary objectives for the burn are to reduce the risk of uncharacteristically high severity fire through the reduction of hazardous fuels, to promote aspen regeneration, and to improve wildlife habitat and forest health.
The burn area, Forest Service roads and trails will be temporarily closed to the public on the day of the burn and possibly the day after for firefighters and public safety. Visitors to the forest should contact the Heber Ranger District Office (435) 654-0470 or Kamas office at (435) 783-4338 to confirm when the prescribed fire will be implemented.
To meet resource and safety concerns, prescribed fires only occur when a specific set of conditions are met. These conditions include air, soil and vegetation moisture levels, temperatures, wind directions and speeds, smoke dispersal and expected fire behavior. Prescribed fires will only be ignited when fuel moistures and weather conditions will allow the smoke to dissipate or drift away from communities near the burn area.
Qualified fire personnel will use hand held drip torches, terra torch, and a helicopter to ignite fire.  Engine and hand crews will monitor the fire area until it is completely out.  Smoke may also be visible during the burn and is expected to linger during the evening and early morning hours.
