Forest Service personnel plan to burn slash piles near the Payson Lakes area beginning March 21, pending weather conditions. The project area is located in Payson Canyon near Maple Dell Scout Camp, four miles southeast of Payson, Utah.  The project will take approximately 1 day to complete.

The slash piles consist of oak, maple, juniper, and fir that were removed as part of a hazardous vegetation reduction project. Slash pile burning is conducted during spring, fall, or winter, weather conditions permitting. The vegetation reduction project was completed in 2017 and aided in the protection of the Maple Dell scout camp during the wildland fires last year. Burning the remaining piles is necessary to complete the reduction project and create a safer zone around those values at risk from future wildfire danger.

Smoke may be visible from surrounding areas and the I-15 corridor the day of burning and for several days following ignition while the piles fully consume. The public is encouraged not to report the smoke.
