Gun Range Fire August 31, 2019 Update

The Gun Range Fire, located east of Bountiful, Utah on the Salt Lake Ranger District of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest began at approximately 12:30 AM on August 30, 2019. The fire was started by an abandoned campfire and is still under investigation. 

Municipal, county and federal resources responded to the initial report that night. The Northern Utah Interagency Type 3 Team was ordered Friday morning, and is in unified command with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Forestry, Fire and State Lands and South Davis Metro Fire Department. Structure protection was provided by multiple cooperating agencies from Salt Lake, Davis and Weber Counties. Handcrews were supported by 5 wildland engines, 3 helicopters and multiple air tankers throughout the day.

Last night crews continued to secure the area around structures. Police officers from Bountiful City as well as neighboring jurisdictions staffed the evacuation area.

Today: Currently the fire is approximately 365 acres and smoldering in brush and tall grass. There are 7 handcrews making good progress on the perimeter of the fire, and at this time there is 10% containment. Firefighters will work throughout the day to secure the fireline and fully suppress the fire. Air resources including 3 helicopters are available support suppression efforts throughout the shift.

Closures: Evacuations will be lifted for residents only to return to their homes at 11:00 AM today. Ward Canyon Road is closed from the Forest boundary to the intersection of Skyline Drive and Sessions Mountain Road. The North Firebreak Road is closed on National Forest Lands from the Bountiful B north to Rick’s Creek. The forest service road closures will be lifted at 8 PM on Sunday. Tolman Park will remain closed until Monday morning.
