Volunteers needed for Tenderfoot Mountain Trail Construction Project on June 17

Silverthorne, CO (June 12, 2017) –  Volunteers are needed on Saturday, June 17 to work with the Friends of the Dillon Ranger District (FDRD) and Summit County Off-Road Riders (SCORR) to construct up to ½ mile of new trail located just north of the water tanks and Oro Grande Trail in Dillon, Colorado. Last fall, Dillon Ranger District staff blazed new trail using a mini-excavator. Trees and stumps were removed and a bench for the trail was created. Hand work is now needed to complete the trail. This will include:

  • Hauling downed trees away from the edge of the trail.
  • Dispersing the berm of soil on the lower edge of the trail.
  • Raking and leveling the trail tread to have a slight outslope
  • Feathering the backslope
  • Using wheelbarrows to import mineral soil in areas where there is mostly organic soil.
  • Compacting imported mineral soil to create the trail tread.

The new trail, will be part of a 5 mile connection between the Straight Creek Road (County Road 51) with Tenderfoot Mountain and Frey Gulch. This new, 5 mile connection is called the Tenderfoot Mountain Trail (not to be confused with the Tenderfoot Trail, a 1-mile hiking spur off the Oro Grande Trail). The new trail will provide recreational opportunity for a variety of users including hikers and riders of off-highway motorcycles, mountain bikes and horses. This project is part of the third construction phase of the Tenderfoot Mountain Motorcycle Trail System funded primarily by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife State OHV grant program.

Those interested in volunteering are requested to sign up at www.FDRD.org. Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m. near the Dillon water tank and hike a short distance to the trail. Volunteers will need to bring a lunch, however, refreshments will be provided at a Tailgate party at 2 p.m.
