Forest Service seeking public comment on Aspen Highlands Projects

ASPEN, COLO. – The Forest Service is seeking public comment on a project proposal from Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) on Aspen Highlands. The 2018 Aspen Highlands Ski Area Improvement Projects proposes to improve skier circulation and enhance skiing and snowboarding opportunities on the mountain through a variety of activities.

The projects include installation of the new Goldenhorn Platter lift, tree removal and grading on skier’s right of Oly Face, and glading on slopes of Eden. All projects are located within the Aspen Highlands Special Use Permit Area boundary (SUP) and referenced in the 2013 Aspen Highlands Master Development Plan.

Installation of the Goldenhorn Platter lift will offer guests, specifically race athletes, a more efficient turnaround time for training. Construction activities for the lift include concrete foundations for lift terminals and towers, powerline installation at the top of the Thunderbowl lift to the surface lift top terminal, and minor grading at the proposed top terminal area.

Tree removal and grading at the bottom of Oly Face will help to improve skier circulation in the Cloud Nine Chairlift unload area. Tree removal would also provide more direct access to the Meadows side of the mountain from Oly Face.

Additionally, tree glading in the Eden area will allow for improved access and enhanced terrain opportunities for skiers and snowboarders.

This public scoping period will be the only opportunity for individuals interested in or affected by this proposal to identify any potential extraordinary conditions or significant issues before the Responsible Official makes a decision.
