Forest Service releases details for Conundrum Hot Springs overnight camping permit

ASPEN, COLO. – Feb. 6, 2018 – The Forest Service has released information for the new, overnight camping permit reservation process for Conundrum Hot Springs in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. Starting on April 18, 2018, permits will be required year-round for camping in the vicinity of Conundrum Hot Springs. The Conundrum Hot Springs permit zone includes all of Conundrum Creek Valley from Silver Dollar Pond to Triangle Pass, and includes the popular Conundrum Hot Springs.

Overnight campers will be required to make reservations in advance for campsites in the permit zone. Initially, seventeen campsites will be available for reservation. Three additional campsites will be added in the summer of 2018 for a total of 20 campsites. Permits will be available for reservation starting at 8 a.m. Mountain Time (MST) on April 18, 2018. Details for how to reserve a permit are available here or by visiting www.Recreation.gov and searching “Conundrum Hot Springs Permit.”

“We are pleased to release information on how to reserve an overnight camping permit for Conundrum Hot Springs,” said Karen Schroyer, District Ranger. “We are asking for the public to be patient with us as we implement this new system. We expect that we will need to fine-tune and refine parts of the reservation process as we go along to make sure the system meets the intent of the management plan and the needs of the public.”

Permits will only be available online at www.Recreation.gov. Ranger stations will not issue permits. Permit seekers are advised to set up an account on Recreation.gov in advance of permit release dates. Once released, permits will be available on a first come, first served basis with a limit of two permits per person, per calendar year. Additionally, visitors accessing Conundrum Hot Springs from Copper Creek, near Crested Butte, will still need to obtain a permit to camp in the Conundrum Hot Springs permit zone.

Overnight permits will be available for reservation according to the following schedule:

  • Overnight permits for April 18-July 31, 2018: Available at 8:00 a.m. MST on April 18, 2018.
