Dillon Ranger District lifts Stage 2 Fire Restrictions; maintains Stage 1 Fire Restrictions for National Forest Lands in Summit County

SILVERTHORNE, Colo. – The Dillon Ranger District on the White River National Forest will be lifting Stage 2 Fire Restrictions and entering into Stage 1 Fire Restrictions effective immediately for all White River National Forest lands within Summit County.

“The eastern side of the forest has received more moisture than other areas of the Forest over the past few weeks,” said Scott Fitzwilliams, Forest Supervisor. “Stage 1 Fire Restrictions will still apply, and we are still asking the public to exercise caution and care, but folks can go back to having campfires within developed campgrounds on the Dillon Ranger District.”

Fire managers base decisions about fire restrictions on specific moisture measurements in vegetation and other risk factors such as predicted weather and amount of current fire activity. The following restrictions will be enforced on White River National Forest Lands within Summit County:

  • Campfires are only allowed within designated fire grates in developed campgrounds (i.e., a metal, in-ground containment structure -- fire pans and rock campfire rings are not acceptable).
  • No fires of any type, including charcoal, outside of developed areas.
  • No smoking except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or in a barren area free of vegetation.
  • No use of explosive materials, including explosive targets.
  • No welding or operation of an acetylene or other similar torch with open flame except from an area that has been cleared of vegetation.
  • No operation of any internal combustion engine without a spark arresting device properly installed and in working order.

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions remain in effect for all White River National Forest Lands within Eagle, Pitkin, Gunnison, Garfield, Rio Blanco, and Mesa counties until further notice. Please visit the White River National Forest website for information on Stage 2 Fire Restrictions.

Fire restrictions on these lands will be in place until further notice. Those found responsible for starting wildfires will also face restitution costs of suppressing the fire.
