Forest Service seeks public input on Black Hills Energy project

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. - The Forest Service is seeking public comments on a proposal by Black Hills Energy to construct two new natural gas storage wells within the Wolf Creek Storage Field on the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District in Pitkin County. The wells will replace two existing wells, and will be drilled within the original footprint of the existing well pad location.

The new wells are needed to continue to provide safe and reliable natural gas to the Roaring Fork Valley into the future. Wolf Creek Storage Field is an underground natural gas storage area located in the White River National Forest, serving Black Hills Energy customers in the Roaring Fork Valley. Natural gas is gathered in the storage wells during the summer and used during high-demand winter months.

The Forest Service will evaluate surface impacts of the project; the BLM is responsible for evaluating and approving the project below the surface. Comments will be most helpful if they give specific feedback on the elements of the project that pertain to the surface area. The Forest is required by law to work with oil and gas operators that have leases on National Forest System lands. This storage lease is a valid and existing lease within the Wolf Creek Storage Area leased prior to the 2015 White River National Forest Future Oil and Gas Leasing Decision.

The project is proposed to take place during the upcoming summer months. An increase in truck traffic is expected on Four Mile Road and 300 Road to move workers and equipment at the beginning and end of the project. Public access to surrounding National Forest System lands will continue during the project implementation. A site-specific closure order is being considered at the pad location for public safety during drilling operations.

Comments will be accepted for 30 days. For more information and to submit a comment visit: Project updates will also be available at
