Localized Alcohol Ban, Camping, Campfire Restrictions Enacted for areas of Detroit Ranger District

Contact(s): Detroit Ranger Station, 503-854-3366

To continue to provide a positive visitor experience and care for the forest, the Detroit Ranger Station will once again be enforcing local camping, campfire and parking restrictions at heavy-use sites around the Detroit Ranger District. Additionally, the previously enacted alcohol ban at the Three Pools Day Use Area remains in effect.

“As the Little North Fork area becomes more popular, crowding and overuse of the area has impacted the experience for visitors and is also impacting the forest. The alcohol ban and visitor control measures are helping to restore a quality recreation experience for our visitors and maintain forest health” says District Ranger Grady McMahan. The District first put in place these restrictions in 2017 and has received supportive responses.

Detroit restrictions in place (see full details at link below):

  • No alcohol at Three Pools Day Use Area.
  • Three Pools Day Use Area parking will be restricted to the spaces in the main parking lot, parking is prohibited outside the main lot and will be strictly enforced
  • No marijuana use on National Forest land.
  • Opal Creek trailhead parking will be restricted to first ¼ mile on south shoulder. In prior years, cars were allowed to park along the first ½ mile.
  • Overnight camping restrictions will be enforced for portions of the French Creek, Blowout and Breitenbush roads, and Elk Lake.

We encourage visitors to purchase a Northwest Forest Pass ($30/yr or $5/day) at local offices and stores in advance of their visit (see table below for nearby businesses selling the Northwest Forest Pass).  This will help discourage vandalism that occasionally takes place at fee tubes in remote areas, such as Three Pools.
