The Willamette National Forest is making improvements to Forest Service Road 19 (Aufderheide Drive) which connects Highway 58 near Oakridge/Westfir to Highway 126 near Rainbow/McKenzie Bridge. Construction will occur Mondays through Thursdays beginning July 9 and ending August 2.

The construction will begin near Box Canyon at the top of the pass and continue downgrade (north) towards Highway 126. Motorists should expect complete closures Monday through Thursday and up to 60 minute delays on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Access to Terwillger Hot Springs from the Highway 126 (north) side of Road 19 continues to be blocked by a large landslide deposit. During the July through early August construction, access to Terwilliger will also be blocked from the Highway 58 (south) side.

Construction on Road 19 will be implemented in discrete sections, so some sites may open as the construction moves north down the hill toward Highway 126. See map for specifics. The anticipated closure dates and locations are:

  • From the intersection of Road 19 and Road 1958 down the hill to the intersection of Road 19 and Road 1985:
    • July 9 through July 12, 8:00am to 5:00pm
    • July16 through July 19, 8:00am to 5:00pm
  • From the intersection of Road 19 and Road 1985 junction down the hill to the intersection of Road 19 and Road 1900-410:
    • July 23 through July 26th, 8:00am to 5:00pm
  • From the intersection of Road 19 and Road 1985 junction down the hill to the intersection of Road 19 and Road 1993:
    • July 30 through August 2, 8:00am to 5:00pm

At some point during this construction, access to all campgrounds from Cougar Crossing to Box Canyon will be closed including:  French Pete, Hard Rock, Red Diamond, and Roaring River. Similarly, access will be closed to trailheads including French Pete, Rebel and Roaring Ridge South. Visitors to Indian Ridge Lookout can come up Quartz Creek Road (2618) and follow the 1980-247 spur road into the lookout.
