Closures extended for Terwilliger Fire

Contact(s): Terwilliger Fire Information: (541) 719-8135

Fire officials are extending the area closure for the Terwilliger Fire for public and firefighter safety. A combination of very high fire danger, dry conditions, hazards, and fire behavior warrants the extended closure. The new area closure extends the closure of Forest Service Road 19 (Aufederheide Scenic Highway) south to Box Canyon and includes Red Diamond, Frissell Crossing, and Roaring River campgrounds as well as Box Canyon Horse Camp and Guard Station, along with trails and trailheads within the extended closure.

“Public and employee safety and security are foremost on our minds," said Forest Supervisor Tracy Beck. "This extended closure will help crews implement strategies and tactics where and when they can be safe and successful.”

The new closure allows for safe access and work by firefighters and reflects the significant hazards wildland firefighters and equipment are encountering. Snags and other hazard trees are falling on the road. On Sunday, August 26, a rockslide covered the road, and rolling debris created obstructions that slowed the crews’ ability to respond and engage.

Conditions are still conducive to new ignitions and rapid spread of fire even with the cooler temperatures and the small amount moisture we had had earlier this week. Campfires are currently banned forest-wide, including in developed campgrounds and wilderness areas. Smoking is not allowed, except within an enclosed vehicle or building or in a developed recreation site. Visitors are reminded to never dispose of smoking materials on the ground, in bark mulch or in dry vegetation; make sure butts and ashes are completely extinguished by using water or sand.

The Pacific Northwest is currently experiencing a very challenging fire year due to both the number and size of active fires and the current shortage of firefighting resources (like crews, aircraft, and supplies) to meet this high demand. Please, obey all fire restrictions and encourage others to do the same; no one should set the spark that becomes a wildfire. Visitors can call 9-1-1 to report a fire or suspicious activity.

Closed Areas: From Hwy 126, the area closure begins where Forest Service Road (FSR) 19 intersects with FSR 1900-408 and continues south to Box Canyon. All roads, trails and campgrounds that fall within the closure area are closed. The closure does not include Oregon State Highway 126. For a map of the closure area visit http://go.usa.gov/xRnz7 .
