Current Status: Yesterday’s weather conditions optimized firing operations and crews were able to strengthen containment lines on the northwest and southwest flanks. To the northwest, crews completed containment line from Forest Service Road (FS) 1986 down to FS19, while helicopters provided bucket support to wet the exterior of the fire perimeter reducing spotting potential. In the northeast, fire advanced on toward the FS1993 as crews removed flammable materials and set up hose line. To the south, some group tree torching occurred and crews worked to close lines from FS140 to FS100. A structure assessment plan has been completed for the Highway 126 corridor and Kings Road.

Planned Actions: Today’s weather will be hotter and drier than Tuesday, increasing fire activity and also providing good conditions for firing operations. More concentrated smoke will enter the area today from Washington, California and southwest Oregon and will settle in the valley until the late afternoon, hindering air operations. More smoke information is available at the air quality links below. To the northwest, crews will strengthen lines along FS1986 and focus on holding the completed line between FS1986 and FS19. In the northeast crews will continue work along FS1993, strengthening line in anticipation of the approaching fire. In the south, firing operations will be utilized to widen containment lines progressing along FS140, FS142 and FS206 to FS1986.

Key Message: Hazardous conditions exist along FS19. Over the course of the fire there have been numerous instances where large debris such as car-sized boulders and large trees have fallen onto FS19 creating frequent near miss incidents for fire personnel and vehicles. Due to these hazardous conditions, fire managers decided to close FS19 to all traffic, including fire traffic. Road clearing along FS19 will continue in the event that emergency vehicles need to travel the road for rapid evacuation of injured personnel. It was determined that having fire personnel drive a longer alternate route around the fire will lessen the probability of significant injury rather than exposing them to unpredictable falling debris along FS19.

Restrictions: The Willamette National Forest has implemented a Forest-wide campfire ban, which includes all campgrounds and Wilderness areas.
