Firewood Permits

The Willamette National Forest offers free personal-use firewood permits with a limit of 6 cords per household per year. Please make sure you contact the district office to confirm permit availability, as it can vary depending on the district, the availability of wood and the type of permit. Firewood permits are generally available year-round, but depending on the season, snow levels in the winter or high fire danger in the summer can affect the availability of wood and/or permits.

A permit is valid through the termination date stated on the permit. Firewood permits are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Maps of where you can harvest will be provided with your permit in the mail.

Commercial-use firewood permits or sales may be available, contact the district office regarding availability or to be notified.

On districts that offer district-wide collection, please check fire closure areas prior to heading out for collection. These areas are often not included on the synopsis but can be found online under our alerts and notices page.

Springfield Interagency Office:

Contact the district you are requesting a permit from for issuance out of the Springfield Interagency Office.

Detroit Ranger District (please place orders Monday-Friday; 8 a.m - 4 p.m.):

Up to 6 cords of free, personal-use firewood per household is available district-wide, except as indicated in the synopsis. When a permit is issued, a synopsis of the district is included that depicts the variation of allowances for collection including areas and dates for cutting standing green alder, maple, and chinquapin from within the road area. Additional maps are also available at the front desk from time to time throughout the year for cutting within areas that are restricted on the synopsis (such as timber sale areas).

McKenzie River Ranger District (please place orders Monday-Friday; 8 a.m - 4 p.m.):

Up to 6 cords of free, personal-use firewood per household is available, issued by area on a permit-by-permit basis as determined by the firewood coordinator. Each permit on the McKenzie River Ranger District will be issued two cords at a time, in a specifically mapped area (McKenzie River does not offer district-wide permits). The district firewood coordinator determines whether to issue a permit based on location of the wood, and its compliance with laws and regulations. The firewood coordinator will evaluate and will let the individual who identified the wood know when to pick up the permit, or why it was denied.
