Several roads within the Chattahoochee National Forest are unsafe and impassable because of damage caused by excessive rainfall in December 2015. Forest Service engineers and contract crews continue to repair damage from these landslides.

The Forest Service worked with the Federal Highway Administration to fund much of the major repair work needed.

Current closures and alerts:

Conasauga Ranger District temporary closures: (view on map):

  • Holly Creek Road (FSR18) is now OPEN to vehicular traffic. Contractors worked long hours to stabilize two large landslides to insure the road opened to the public for the week of Thanksgiving. Heavy equipment continues to work in the area. See more: https://www.facebook.com/ChattOconeeNF/videos/1642743395765446/

  • FSR 630D (Rocky Flats Road) also remains temporarily closed due to the formation of a large sinkhole near the intersection with FSR 630 (Mill Creek Road).

All forest visitors should use extreme caution when travelling within the national forest, as weather conditions may present flooding, downed trees, road wash-outs, and landslides. Additional rain may increase these dangers when soils are already saturated. Visitors are encouraged to check local weather forecasts and the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests’ website for safety alerts.
