What Is Going On?

The Generation Green is a conservation education program on the Eldorado National Forest. This program includes summer employment and year-round involvement with the students in their high school clubs. During the summer, this program connects local high school students with the forest through meaningful employment. In 2019,  eighteen Youth Conservation Corp (YCC) enrollees were hired for eight weeks during their summer break. The crew leaders are college students and alumni of Generation Green programs on the Eldorado National Forest, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Sierra National Forest. Working alongside Forest Service personnel and partners, these students accomplished critical work for a variety of Forest projects, learning leadership skills, and developing a strong work ethic.

2019 Project Summary: The 2019 summer program included a week of training covering topics, such as, how to use a GPS, backpacking, team building and radio/ vehicle maintenance. Generation Green crews in the following weeks worked with our Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialists, Recreation staff, Wildland Fire staff, Archaeologists, and Botanists, learning about mapping, protecting our natural and cultural resources, how to identify and remove non-native plant species, campground and trail maintenance and the intricacies of wildland fire management. Working with the Placerville Nursery, Soil Scientist, Silviculture and Watershed staff they tackled an ecological restoration project, tree seedlings cultivation, erosion control, soil stabilization, and debris cleanup. For the final week,  the students focused on leadership and public speaking, culminating in an individual presentation to Forest Staff, peers and their families about their summer transformation during their graduation ceremony.
