Proposed Winter 2020-21 Recreation Events and Guiding Services

The Forest will update this webpage with additional information about the status of each permit as it is reviewed by specialists and any permits are issued. The public should submit comments by November 6, 2020 to comments-northern-flathead@usda.gov. For questions, please email Sadie Wehunt.

Action Rentals Swan Lake Project

Action Rentals has proposed guided day-use Over-Snow Vehicles, Specifically Snowmobiles, Motorized Snowbikes (motocross bike retrofitted with a ski on the front and a track on the rear), Tracked ATVs and Tracked UTVs in the Island Unit of the Swan Lake Ranger District. Dates of proposed activities are December 1-March 31.Project Map

Trailhead and parking area at Wildbill TH and Snowmobile parking at Blacktail Ski Area.

Use would occur on designated trails and Over-Snow off trail use as depicted on the Flathead National Forest Swan Lake Ranger District Over Snow Vehicle Use Map 2011.

Livery service of Over-Snow vehicles (same as listed above) would be to the Wildbill TH and Snowmobile Parking areas.

Action Rentals Tally Lake Project

Action Rentals is proposing guided day-use snowmobile an motorized snowbike (motocross bike retrofitted with a ski on the front and a track on the rear) tours ½ day and full day trips. Dec. 15th – Mar. 31st. Project Map

First route requested: Martin Lakes Road (2872) as an up and back route, with potential play area around Martin Lakes.

Second route requested: Up road 9620, on the West side of Martin Creek to access a variety of existing, connected snowmobile trails as shown on the over the snow map.

A warming hut will be erected near the junction of 910 and 2880, in the form of a Yurt or Wall Tent for the duration of operations, day-use only. 200 user days have been requested. Party size will be generally 6 snowmobiles, with a maximum of party size of 10.

Glacier Adventure Guides Project

Glacier Adventure Guides is requesting 75 day-use service days to provide guided day-use cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and a misc. winter outdoor education class (Basic winter/backcountry travel ed, basic avalanche ed, winter safety ed) opportunities from Dec. 1 – April 30th.   Max party size is 8.

Glacier Nordic Club Project

Glacier Nordic Club (GNC) is proposing to host a 1-time trail grooming/cross country day-use ski event in the Cedar Flats are north of Columbia Falls. Event prep would start on Friday 01/20/21 at 0800 and clean up would be completed by Monday 01/24/20121. Actual event dates are planned for Saturday 01/22 & Sunday 01/23. Groomed routes would be the 10815 road from gate to gate, the 10816 road and the Turkey Trot, Ohm, Voltage, and Teakettle Trails (tr. 6300, 6301, 6302, & 6303). Up to 7 miles of groomed routes possible. Estimated maximum number of participants is 250. The GNC is proposing to plow a parking area at the Alder trailhead/switchback near the end of 4th Avenue. The GNC is coordinating with the City of Columbia Falls and Meadow Lake Golf Course for additional parking and a shuttle to bring people from the golf course to the trailhead/parking area at 4th Avenue. GNC is proposing 1 small tent to be set up to greet participants and provide information at the 4th Avenue access. Project Map

Northwest Montana Adventures Project

Northwest Montana Adventures has proposed guided day-use snowmobile trips December 1st through March 31st.  Party size is will average 6-8 clients, with a maximum of 12.  Guided snowmobile trips will be tied into Stillwater State Forest where NWMA is currently permitted for guided snowmobile trips. The proposed route includes Taylor Creek groomed route (9790) to its junction with the 316 groomed trail, to its junction with groomed route 1658, back to Werner Peak and re-enter State lands. SnowBike Nation Project - Tally Lake

Snowbike Nation is proposing guided motorized snowbike (motocross bike retrofitted with a ski on the front and a track on the rear) tours from Dec. 1st – Mar. 31st. Routes would include various over-the-snow routes (roads and trails) on the Tally Lake Ranger District (identified on map).  200 service days have been requested, with a maximum party size of 6 bikes per trip. SnowBike Nation Project - Swan Lake

Snowbike Nation is proposing guided motorized snowbike (motocross bike retrofitted with a ski on the front and a track on the rear) tours in the Island Unit (Island Unit Map) and Crane Mtn. (Crane Mtn Map) area of the Swan Lake Ranger District.  Proposed dates are Dec 1- March 31.

Trailhead and Parking areas include: Wildbill TH, Snowmobile parking at Blacktail Ski Area, Crane Mtn. snowmobile parking area and Porcupine.

Guiding would occur on trails and Over-Snow off trail use as depicted on the Flathead National Forest Swan Lake Ranger District Over Snow Vehicle Use Map 2011 (identified on map).

The Patrol Fund Project

The Patrol Fund has proposed to host an Avalanche Level 2 course. It would be a 4-day course February 18-21, 2021 in the Whitefish Mountain Resort Sidecountry Terrain (identified on map). Class size would be limited to 12 participants. No motorized use, day use only. 48 total service days are requested. Project Map

Whitefish Shuttle Project

Whitefish Shuttle is requesting 200 service days to provide shuttle services (livery) and guided cross country or snow shoeing trips within the Round Meadow Trails from December 1-April 15. Up to 7 trips per week is requested, and one trip a day, with up to 15 participants (including Guide). They would be offering either just transportation, or transportation with a Guide. Drop off locations for livery services would occur at the established trailhead off Star Meadow Road. Project Map

Whitefish Vertical Adventures Project

Whitefish Vertical Adventures (WVA) is requesting 50 temporary service days to provide day-use backcountry ski guiding adjacent to Whitefish Mountain Resort from Dec 15th, 2020-April 11th, 2021. The estimated party size is 1-4 clients, and WVA is estimating 10 trips of varied party size throughout the winter. The proponent has discussed the proposal with Whitefish Mountain Resort and received approval to use their chairlifts and facilities. Project Map
