Fuelwood Permit Sales

In alignment with federal guidance on COVID-19 and New Mexico public health orders, the SFNF has adopted a no-contact process to sell permits over the phone and deliver them by postal mail.

  • Due to the high volume of calls, it may take us a day or two to return your call.  Thank you for your patience.
  • As of October 21, 2019, we are only able to sell personal fuelwood permits.

Fuelwood Permit Sales (personal-use)

We are selling fuelwood permits virtually. Options:

  • Submit a request to purchase a fuelwood permit online and receive a call-back from a customer service representative to complete the transaction.

The online request requires your email, full name and phone number. Do not include your credit card information. Please tell us the name of the district where you expect to collect fuelwood. If you want to purchase a permit for green wood on Rowe Mesa, please note that as well.
  • Call one of our offices and leave a voicemail with your name and call-back number.

Changes for this year: The $20 permit is good for up to 10 cords (double the previous limit of five cords). Dead-and-down permits, which expire on Dec. 31, 2020, are valid on the entire forest, except in designated wilderness areas.

Be prepared to provide info over the phone, contact our offices, permit and tags will be mailed to you and the appropriate gathering places and times are available on the website

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Select a question to find more information and answers to frequently asked questions for fuelwood sales.

Can I go to my local Forest Service Office to purchase a fuelwood permit?

Santa Fe National Forest offices are still closed to align with federal guidance and New Mexico public health orders; however, permits can be purchased over the phone. Customer service representatives are ready to take sales over the phone and permits will be mailed out directly to you.

Will checks or money orders be accepted?

At this time, our offices are only accepting debit and credit card purchases. We accept all major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.

Can I only purchase my permit over the phone with my local Forest Service office?

Any of the Santa Fe National Forest District Offices, as well as the Supervisor’s Office, will be able to issue permits. It does not need to be your local office. You should leave a voicemail at only one location and provide a name and call back number.

We ask that customers DO NOT leave credit card information on the voicemail.

What information do I need to provide if I have a designated hauler or cutter?

If you have a designated hauler or cutter, the driver's license and vehicle information of the hauler or cutter will be required.

I received a busy signal and/or left a voicemail. What do I do now?

Customers may experience busy signals and/or be directed to voicemail; however, representatives will be monitoring voicemails and following up as soon as possible. You should leave a voicemail at only one location and provide a name and call back number. We ask that customers DO NOT leave credit card information on the voicemail.

What has changed for fuelwood permits?

This year, a $20 permit will be good for up to 10 cords, double the previous amount. Dead-and-down permits, which expire on Dec. 31, 2020, are valid on the entire forest, except in designated wilderness and restricted permit areas.

Where can I gather fuelwood?

Appropriate gathering locations can be found in the current fuelwood guide that will be included with your permit and tags.

When can I gather fuelwood?

Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place on the Santa Fe National Forest to reduce the risk of an accidental fire started by mechanical equipment during the hottest, driest part of the day. Fuelwood permit holders may still collect wood as long as the chainsaws are off by 10 a.m. and fuelwood cutting cannot resume until 6 p.m.

Be safe and plan ahead to reduce unnecessary exposure and impacts on emergency personnel.
