Photo Submission Form and Guidelines

photos on our website or social media pages?

Submit your best digital images for display and we'll post them on our Sierra National Forest website, twitter or Flickr site.


Image size and format:

  • Must be a Sierra National Forest image and appropriate for display on our portal.  

  • The image display size must be between 1024 x 768 pixels and 800 x 600 pixels. 

  • The file must be a high quality JPG file. 



  • By your submission, you grant the U.S. Forest Service a royalty-free, non-exclusive, irrevocable permission in the photo(s) to use, reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute copies to the public, and display publicly, in any media, and by any manner and means, now known or hereafter devised, worldwide, for U.S. Forest Service purposes. Also, you agree that it is your sole responsibility to obtain all permissions necessary to grant these rights. The images must not have been previously published in any publication.

  • If the photograph is of a person or persons, the photographer affirms the person(s) photographed has(have) given their permission to be included in the photograph and for the photograph to be displayed on the Sierra National Forest Portal without any fee or other form of compensation.

  • Each accepted image will be displayed and captioned with details provided for the image as well as a credit for the photographer. 

  • All images submitted will be considered. Only pictures meeting the above critera as judged by the Sierra National Forest will be displayed on the portal. The Sierra National Forest reserves the right to edit captions to remove names, correct spelling or to enhance the description of the image.

  • Subject matter must be suitable for publication on the Sierra National Forest portal and must be appropriate for viewing by the general public.The Sierra National Forest retains the right to determine what will constitute inappropriate content.


Image Eligibility: 

  • Images must be clear and focused, have no date stamps on them. Images from cell phones are not usable due to their small size.

  • You may submit an unlimited number of entries taken at any time, but you must submit each image with a separate release/application form. 

  • You must provide a detailed caption for each image. For example: John Smith and his daughter stroll for the first time along the Hites Cove trail on the Sierra National Forest, on March 27, 2013.
