Remembering H-514's Daniel Laird
Every year between June 30th and July 6th the Forest Service and many other agencies observe Wildland Firefighter Week of Remembrance to honor all those who have fallen in the line of duty.
The Tahoe National Forest would like to take a moment to honor the life and sacrifice of H-514’s very own Daniel Laird. Daniel, originally from Graeagle, CA started as a seasonal firefighter on the Tahoe and worked his way up to Helitack Captain, touching the lives of many. His impact continues to be felt and his love and knowledge of his job, passion for aviation, his ability to lead a variety of crews, and his dedication to being an instructor and helping people grow has been carried on by the crews and the many individuals who worked alongside Daniel. They honor his memory as they continue supporting and protecting communities, natural resources, and fellow firefighters like Daniel did daily for 23 years with the agency.
On March 27th, 2019 the Tahoe National Forest family suffered a tremendous loss when Daniel tragically passed as a result of a helicopter crash while supporting a prescribed fire operation on the Sam Houston National Forest in Texas.
Tragedies of this nature serve as a reminder of the honorable work and sacrifices made by firefighters like Daniel, who daily commit themselves to support and protect communities around the country.
Daniel’s memory will never be forgotten and our gratitude for his courageous service and his, along with his family’s sacrifice goes beyond words, today and always.
