Kids' Fishing Day at Packer Lake

PACKER LAKE

It's that time of year again! Time for Kids’ Fishing Day at Packer Lake on the Yuba River Ranger District. For the twenty-first year, children under the watchful eyes of their parents will gather at Packer Lake to test their angler skills and learn a few tricks from area fishermen.

This free fishing day for kids is scheduled July 21, 2018, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The entire family is encouraged to fish and learn about fishing at this exciting event. There will be plenty of fun hands-on nature activities for the kids.

“This is a great time to take kids fishing and teach them a sport that will provide a lifetime of enjoyment,” says Lauren Hoyle, Assistant Wildlife Biologist for the Yuba River Ranger District. “There will be amphibians and reptiles to see and learn more about,” says Hoyle. This will be quite an educational opportunity.

Just before the event, California Fish & Wildlife will stock the lake with plenty of fish and 50 of those fish will have special tags. If one of the kids catches one of those tagged fish, they’ll win a free prize!

Fishing poles will be available to borrow for the event. Every kid that shows up will be entered into a raffle. And as an added attraction, kids can paint their very own “fish print” t-shirts and bandanas. Last year, the kids really enjoyed creating their own artwork from fish. There will also be games and presentations by wildlife experts and local anglers who know a trick or two about fishing at the lake.
