Stationary Fuel Cells Provide Power at a Remote Forest Service Ranger Station

By Kathleen Snodgrass

The historic Big Goose Ranger Station sits high in the Big Horn Mountains. It can be cold and lonely come winter. The Forest Service chose this location to install the first stationary fuel cell system in Wyoming and in the Forest Service. Several Federal agencies and industry groups joined forces to make it happen. The fuel cell system provides electricity to two cabins, an office/shop, five trailer sites, and the station's drinking water and wastewater pumping systems. Hot water produced by the fuel cells helps heat one of the cabins. This tech tip describes the installation process and how the cells worked during the first season.
