The Tucson Interagency Fire Center has a new leased building that was designed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver certification. An array of solar panels not only can generate 2 kilowatts of electricity, it provides shaded parking for 12 vehicles. Gabions (wire baskets filled with native rocks) were placed in front of the building for a low-cost crash barrier. Other sustainable features include energy-efficient lighting, high-performance glass, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and white roof surfaces to reflect heat.
