Beckley, Bob . 2012. Sustainability Solutions No. 15: Missoula Aerial Fire Depot and Smokejumper Center Employees Recycle Plastic Bottle Caps. 1273 2T03. Missoula, MT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Missoula Technology and Development Center.

Ongoing recycling efforts at the Missoula Aerial Fire Depot (AFD) and Smokejumper Center have expanded. Recycling facilities do not accept plastic bottle caps because caps are made from different plastic than containers. Now, with the help of sustainable operations consultant Meghan Oswalt, the AFD is recycling caps. Plastic screwdown caps from smokejumper "canteens" and firefighter plastic beverage bottles are sent to a company that repurposes the caps to package hair care and beauty products. For a shipping cost of about $5 per pound, caps are reused instead of thrown away.
