The report "Surface-Aggregate
Stabilization with Chloride
Materials" (0677–1805P–SDTDC)
describes the effectiveness of
applying high concentrations (1.5 or
2 percent) of magnesium chloride
and calcium chloride on aggregate-surfaced
roads at 12 demonstration
projects in 4 Western States. The
chlorides were mixed with the top
2 inches of the crushed aggregate
surfacing and were monitored for
two seasons. The testing showed
significant reductions in dusting,
raveling, and washboarding in the
stabilized sections.
